How to find the right hair styling product to suit you

Whatever your hair type, here’s how to find the right styling product to get that ‘just left the barber look’ at home every day.

POMADES

Pomades are versatile and give that wet, shiny look whilst giving hold to a shorter more textured styled. They also add separation to longer hair. Simply apply a small amount to the palm of your hand and rub hands together until product warms. Work through slightly damp to dry hair, going from ends to roots.

Best for: Sleek, shorter or texturised hair.

WAXES

Waxes are similar to pomades but offer a stronger hold. A good choice if you want to add shine and control to shorter cuts and give hold to thick hair. Wax must be applied to dry hair as oil and water don’t mix. Apply a small amount to the palm of the hands and work through hair from ends to root.

Best for: Adding shine and control to shorter styles.

MUDS AND FIBRES

A great choice when you need maximum control. This styler gives texture to shorter styles and separation to longer hair. With a non-greasy, matte finish you simply apply to dry hair making sure you warm the product in your hands before you work through the hair going from ends to root.

Best for: Disheveled and longer styles.

CREAMS

Styling creams are a great choice if you want something in your hair but don’t want to look as though you have. They offer a lighter finish, shine and are great at taming flyways and neaten shorter styles. Smooth creams into wet or dry hair and if your hair is fine, only apply a small amount to prevent it looking greasy.

Best for: Controlling frizz and more conservative styles.

SPRAY

Any hair type can take a spray as they offer a light hold and texture. Salt sprays can be applied to wet or dry hair to give that beachy, textured look with subtle hold, whereas hair spray is best applied to dry hair to tame flyways and keep hair in place.

Best for: Volume and greater control.

GELS

If you love a wet, sleek look, quality gels have memory once dry enabling a comb-through that can provide a structured, yet dry look. Gels can tend to break and flake off, so always go for a good quality product. Apply to wet hair and let dry naturally or use on drier styles to hold in place. You can easily reactivate by wetting hands and running through the product.

Best for: Strong holds and wet looks.
